Creating Career Pathways at NKADD: From Internships to Leadership

For many who work in the Aging and Disability services field, internships associated with their degree are not just a requirement, they’re a proven path to meaningful careers. Many NKADD team members have degrees in Social Work or Mental Health and Human Services, both of which require a field placement to graduate.  We’re proud to say that some of our best team members started their journey with us as interns.

From Interns to Leaders

Six current members of the team completed internships at NKADD before becoming full-time staff.  Among them are two of our longest-tenured employees:

  • Shannen Kelch, now our Aging and Disability Services Admin and Finance Manager, joined the team in 1997 after interning at NKADD.
  • Kelly Bond, Human Services Specialist for Nutrition and Senior Center Operations, began her NKADD journey in 2000.

Both Shannen and Kelly have become invaluable members of the Aging and Disability Services Division and NKADD as a whole, and their commitment continues to inspire.

Rising Stars from Intern to Expert

We were thrilled to welcome Heather Hopton in 2016 right after her graduation. Today, Heather serves as Manager of Caregiver Programs, overseeing two vital initiatives. Her growth through multiple roles is a perfect example of what’s possible at NKADD. Following closely behind, Paula Wigger completed her internship and started in the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). She later transitioned to the Ombudsman Program where she continues to make our region and NKADD a better place—both through her work and also through her efforts on our internal Events Committee.

New Faces, Bright Futures

Our two most recent success stories are equally inspiring.

Mason Newton joined the PDS Medicaid Waiver Program as a Service Advisor in 2023 after interning at NKADD while earning his Social Work degree. Mason stepped into a challenging role and has done a fantastic job.

Amy Morris came on board in December 2024 after completing her Social Work degree. During her internship, Amy became a certified Ombudsman—a rare and impressive accomplishment. She now serves full-time in the Ombudsman Program. A fun fact about Amy: she transitioned from a career as a Pastry Chef to one in public service!

Growing Our Future, One Intern at a Time

We are incredibly proud of our team, especially those who chose to begin their professional journey with us. Their stories show that NKADD is more than just a workplace. It’s a place where purpose, passion, and professional growth come together.
